yo-yo headband tutorial

There was a UT football game last night (UT beat Wyoming 34-7). Because I live so close to campus, there was crazy traffic around me and the streets were crawling with dude bros looking for parties. I didn't feel like dealing with the crowds, so I decided to stay in, browse Netflix and do some crafting.






I have a ridiculous fabric stash that I've been trying to use up. Fabric yo-yo headbands are a great way to use up scraps that are too small for other projects.

What you will need

• CD or something round to serve as a template
• two scraps of fabric, one big enough for your round template and another to cover the button
• scissors
• needle and thread
• a button maker, like this 
• three 43" long strips of fabric (the long side of your yard of fabric) 
• some good tunes. I listened to The Cute Lepers

Trace your template.

Cut it out.

With the wrong side of the fabric (the side you don't want to use) facing you, fold over the edge and make long stitches. You don't want them too close because you will be gathering the edge to form the yo-yo

It should look like this.

When you've stitched all around, pull the thread to gather the fabric.

The finished yo-yo!

Now it's time to make the button. You could use a regular button, but I like the way the fabric covered buttons look

Sew the button onto the yo-yo.

Take your 3 fabric strips and tie them together, leaving about a 2" tail

When you are braiding them, make sure that the right side of the fabric is facing up so you can see it in the braid.

You might also want to keep any cats away during this process, as the fabric strips wiggling around will certainly get their attention.

When you are done braiding (remember to leave a 2" tail on BOTH ends), sew the yo-yo on, slightly towards one end.
